Description

Springfield Model 1896 Krag Carbine

Spanish American War

.30-40 Krag. 22" barrel length. SN: 27477. Blued metal finish with Nitre blued small parts and polished bolt body set in walnut straight wrist stock with half length upper handguard. Bolt-action internal magazine fed repeating carbine charged by a trapdoor to right receiver. Left receiver struck with model and maker mark reading U.S./1895. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY followed by the serial number. Item features a saddle ring and bar to the left wrist, and mounts Model 1896 adjustable ladder rear notch and pinned front blade sights. Trapdoor butt is void of tools and the interior of the trapdoor struck with the number 48. Stock shows a circle P to the lower wrist and correct a boxed JSA/1896 cartouche of inspector Joseph S. Adams, who began serving as the inspector at Springfield Armory following the death of Samuel W. Porter. Rear sight is graduated to 2000 yards and shows a correct C for carbine mark to the rear face of the ladder. Single barrel band features an integral rear sight protector. The 1896 Krag carbine was approved in May, 1895 but was not issued until March 10, 1896. Thus, 1895 dates appear on early production examples. {ANTIQUE}

Condition
Good. Bore is Frosty with patina and some residue throughout and worn rifling. Metal finish primarily a mottled gray to brown patina with some pitting to the barrel along the edges of the stock, some indentations to the muzzle, likely from replacing the rear sight leaf, and some flecks of oxidation on the triggerguard. Item retains some blue to triggerguard and internal receiver. Stock has been sanded and shows some rounding at the edges, a raised granular structure, and scattered dents and scratches overall.
